Today I had a visitor with me who was getting ready for a singing a solo and wanted to see if nature could help her in her task.
Tänään minulla oli matkassani laulaja, joka halusi kokeilla, miten luonto voisi tukea häntä tulevassa esiintymisessä.
When we hesitate in front of a challenge, we easily lose our balance. But when we take a deep breath, look forward into action and have faith – “I know I can handle this” – we are up to a very enjoyable ride, whether we will be mountain biking, speaking, singing or playing a game of tennis.
It has been interesting and inspiring to experience that by combining body awareness with virtual and acoustical experiences both singers and speakers seem to feel supported in connecting both with their inner and physical voices and the surrounding environment, especially in the moment of potential stress. This encourages us to bring the virtual nature connection to a further use in recording studios, concert halls, auditoriums and practice rooms, just to begin with.
I have experienced that in embodied voice work, nature can play a significant role in providing an environment that appears as the safe and familiar platform for experiential learning experience. When we calm down it becomes possible for us to perceive the outer environment (in music it could be the ensemble, in presentation the audience) and our inner emotional states. When we perceive our inner emotional state, we become present.
Born in Finland I have inherited the love for nature and it felt very clear to continue my musical line to explore the natural world. In past years I have studied GreenCare and other eco art forms, used them in developing my own training work and gotten convinced that together with modern performance training these practices can be of a great benefit in getting in touch with ones authentic self, sound and expression.
